1.0 INTRODUCTION:
Prep 'n' Send (PNS) is a simple, easy to use menu driven
computer program that will let you electronically submit 1989
personal income tax returns and obtain a FAST REFUND.
YOU CAN MAKE COPIES OF Prep 'n' Send for your friends, who will
pay a filing fee (Section 4) for each tax return that is filed
electronically for a FAST REFUND.
The IRS has advised us that direct deposit refunds will be in
your hands within two weeks; paper check refunds within three
weeks. Some users have obtained refunds in less time than this.
We will notify you by mail when we receive confirmation that your
return has been accepted by the IRS.
**************************************************************
Although we have done all we can to isolate users from the
technical and regulation complexity of electronic filing,
there are some important IRS requirements that you MUST
read before completing your electronic return. PLEASE READ
APPENDIX A before you proceed with data input to avoid
delaying your refund.
**************************************************************
1.1 OVERVIEW
Before you start, you MUST make a working copy of the PNS disk
you have received. Refer to Section 5.1 for instructions.
FAILURE TO DO THIS CAN DELAY YOUR REFUND!
Use the working copy to install Prep 'n' Send. See Section 5.
1.2 USING PREP 'N' SEND:
First complete your return on paper, or with the aid of tax
preparation software. Then copy your return information on
to Prep 'n' Send's on-screen tax forms. You must copy your W-2's
to on-screen forms, as well.
For Electronic Filing enter Whole Dollars ONLY (no cents)
The IRS requires you to: Round 0 to 50 cents to ZERO
and 51 to 99 cents to ONE DOLLAR.
********************************************************************
The IRS requires your Name and Address to be entered differently for
electronic filing, than for a paper tax return. If you FAIL TO
FOLLOW the simple instructions in section 7.7.1 regarding the way to
enter this information, your refund will be delayed !!!
********************************************************************
If you want to speed your refund by requesting its direct deposit
to your checking account, be sure to enter the direct deposit
form, 1 page down from the last screens of the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ
forms. (Refer to Section 7.1.3 for instructions).
Select "Validate and Prepare an Xmit File" from the main menu.
Prep 'n' Send performs IRS mandated tests of your electronic
return. Any errors are listed, so that you can correct them.
When you have an error-free return, select "Validate and Prepare
an Xmit File" once more, then select "Xmit a Return" to send your
FAST REFUND return to Nexus Direct for re-transmission to the IRS
- or you can mail the disk to Nexus.
Next print a copy of your return and the necessary IRS 8453
form. (Refer to paragraph 7.1.5 for instructions.)
(A copy of the 8453 form is included with each copy of the
program ordered from Nexus Direct for those that do not have a
compatible printer.)
The 8453 form that you print will include direct deposit
information that you previously entered from the on-screen forms.
The 8453 form supplied in the PNS disk package may be completed
Manually IN INK. Refer to the Direct Deposit instructions in
Sec. 7.1.3
Leave the Declaration Control Number at the top of the form BLANK.
In either case, make sure that the 8453 is complete and signed.
(2 signatures are required for joint returns.)
If you want your FAST REFUND to be direct-deposited in your bank
account, complete the direct-deposit section of the form. (see
paragraph 7.1.3 for instructions.)
Have you paid the filing fee of $19.95? (or $15.00 each for 5 or
more ordered at the same time) See Section 4 for payment
instructions.
Mail your completed 8453 form and all necessary attachments
(See attachment B) to Nexus Direct, PO Box 1912, Binghamton,
New York 13902-1912.
Use Priority Mail. The IRS will not allow us to transmit your
return to them until we receive the 8453!
If you would rather use UPS Blue -- send to Nexus Direct,
164 Court Street, Binghamton, New York 13901.

7.1.3 DIRECT DEPOSIT FORM INSTRUCTIONS 1040, 1040A,
1040EZ, 8453
Using Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ:
For the FASTEST REFUND, enter your direct deposit
information one page down from the last on-screen
form, for Forms 1040,1040A and 1040EZ.
If your return has NOT been prepared by a NON-PAID preparer,
IGNORE and do NOT fill in the UPPER HALF of the direct deposit
form.
If your account is with a Credit Union, rather than a bank,
DO NOT REQUEST DIRECT DEPOSIT until you CONFIRM that they
CAN receive your direct deposit.
The required bank account information can be obtained from
a check or a deposit slip taken from your check book.
Similar numbering applies for savings accounts.
Your ROUTING TRANSIT NUMBER are found at the bottom left
of the check. This must be a 9-digit number.
Your ACCOUNT NUMBER is next, immediately to the right of the
Routing Transit Number.
Enter the source of this information on line III.
Enter the remaining information for lines IV and V.
Be SURE to include a copy of any Bank - originated
document, such as a voided check together with the 8453 Form
that the IRS requires you to mail to Nexus Direct,
to confirm your Direct Deposit information. (See Appendix A1)
7.1.4 VALIDATING AND BUILDING YOUR RETURN FOR TRANSMISSION
Once you have entered all the information into PNS from
your manually completed Forms and Schedules, you are
ready to validate the data you have entered and create
a file that can be transmitted electronically. This
file is called the transmit file. At the Main Menu:
1. Select Option 3, Validate & Build Xmit File.
2. Select the type of return you are filing: 1040,
1040A or 1040EZ.
3. Select the individual return you want to validate
(identified by Social Security Number).
PNS will proceed to check and make sure that you have
filled in all the mandatory fields, and all fields
with the correct type of data, such as, digits in
numeric fields and X's in check mark boxes.
As PNS scans your entry it counts the number of errors
it detects and displays this number on the screen. If
errors are detected, PNS does not build the transmit
file. It tells you that you have errors in your data.
You can then display this information on the screen
or have it sent to your printer.
Once you correct your errors, repeat Steps 1 through 3.
If no errors are detected, PNS builds the transmit file.
At this point you are ready to file your return
electronically.
7.1.5 PRINT A RETURN and an 8453 FORM:
To print your return and the required 8453 Form, see
Section 7.5, part 4.
To print your return, you must have a printer
as specified in Section 3.0.
Nexus Direct can print your return for you for $4.50,
postage paid. Call 1-800-444-3990 for information.
Note: If you have a compatible printer (Section 3) you
may use SHIFT PRINTSCREEN to print individual on-screen
forms, (not Form 8453).
7.2 XMITTING A RETURN:
Once PNS successfully builds the transmit file, you are
ready to send your return to Nexus Direct, for re-transmission
to the IRS. If you have a 1200, 2400 or 9600 baud 100% Hayes
compatible modem proceed to Section 7.4.1., Submitting Your
Return by Modem. If you do not have a modem, or have a 300 baud
modem, or a non-Hayes compatible modem: proceed to Section 7.2.2,
Submitting Your Return on Diskette.
If you have tried unsuccessfully at least two (2) times to
transmit your return via modem you can still submit your
return on diskette to Nexus Direct. See Section 7.2.3,
Submitting Your Return on Diskette.
7.2.2 XMITTING YOUR RETURN BY MODEM:
To transmit your return - at the Main Menu:
1. Selection Option 5, Xmit Return.
2. Select the tax return (by Social Security Number) that
you want to transmit for a FAST REFUND.
3. When prompted, enter your name, address, and day and
evening telephone numbers, and if you have not
previously paid, your credit card information. You may
pay by check or money order, as well. (See Section 4).
4. Select the COM port (1 or 2) that your modem is attached
to. At this point, the rest is automatic. PNS will
initialize your modem, dial Nexus Direct's 800 number
and then transmit your file. During each step, PNS will
display messages at the lower left corner of the screen
to keep you informed of the current file transmission status.
Transmission is fully automatic. PNS knows the toll-free
800 telephone number to dial, and all necessary
passwords and codes. After you select "transmit",
your return is encrypted and virus protected so NO ONE
BUT THE IRS CAN READ IT!
5. Once your return has been transmitted, PNS will hang up
the phone, and return the Main Menu. You can now send
a different return or exit to DOS.
Once you have successfully sent your return electronically,
DO not FORGET to SEND all the NECESSARY DOCUMENTS,
ESPECIALLY THE SIGNED FORM 8453, within 24 HOURS so that
YOUR REFUND can be submitted to the IRS WITHOUT DELAY!
(See Appendix A1)
7.2.3 SUBMITTING YOUR RETURN ON DISKETTE:
You can submit your electronic return on diskette instead of
by modem. The procedure is very simple. Once you have
built an error free transmit file:
1. Exit PNS.
2. Using the DOS copy command, copy the file with your Social
Security Number and the suffix XT to a formatted disk.
example: for SSN 123456789,the file is 123455678.9XT
3. Mail the disk, together with the required documents and
payment, to NEXUS DIRECT (see Appendix A1)
8.0 VERIFICATION OF IRS ACCEPTANCE
As soon as we receive verification from the IRS that they have
accepted your electronic return, we will notify you by mail.
9.0 ERRORS AND ERROR CORRECTION CHARGES:
Prep 'n Send includes error checking that exceeds IRS requirements
and prevents transmission of a return that includes known errors.
Reading and following this Users' Guide prior to data entry
can help prevent errors.
To keep the cost of your FAST REFUND as low as possible,
error correction assistance is available at additional cost:
If we receive incorrect or incomplete documentation, or if
or if the IRS does not accept your return for a valid reason,
you may have to pay an error correction fee of $7.50 or more.
If your 8453 Form is not received by Nexus Direct with a
reasonable time after receipt of your tax return by modem,
we will attempt to phone you and will write to you if we
could not reach you.
The same procedure will apply if your 8453 Form or attachments
are in error or if your electronic file or the disk you sent
us are in error.
The IRS will notify us on a daily basis of any electronic
returns that are rejected. If the reason for the rejection
requires corrections on your part, we will attempt to
contact you on an urgent basis.
Our error correction staff will make two attempts to phone
you. If you do not answer our calls or reply to our
message, we will send you a letter identifying the
required correction.
If you do not reply to the letter or telephone request
within a reasonable time, we will be forced to notify you
that your electronic return has been terminated.
APPENDIX A INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS

NEXUS DIRECT, at the ADDRESS shown at the end of the last page
of this Users' Guide.

delay in sending completed documents will result in a delay
of your refund or a failure to file on time.
